Using eSIM Quick Transfer with Your Android Phone

Select Android models now support eSIM quick transfer, making it super easy to move your wireless plan and phone number from one Android phone to another without having to replace your eSIM or get a new SIM card.

How does the eSIM Quick Transfer feature work?

When someone gets a new Android phone, they go through an initial setup process. During this process, the new phone will ask them if they want to transfer their current phone number to their new phone, which essentially means transferring their eSIM or physical SIM from their old Android phone to this new one. No need to purchase a new SIM card, the eSIM transfer is automatic.

Is this feature only available for eSIM?

No, both eSIM and physical SIM transfers are supported on Android phones. However, eSIM quick transfer works Android-to-Android only. You cannot transfer an eSIM from an Android phone to an iOS phone (or vice versa) using eSIM quick transfer.

What to do before using Android’s eSIM quick transfer

Before you initiate an eSIM quick transfer, take these steps to prepare:

  • Confirm that the Android phone you’re transferring to is eSIM-compatible
    • Check the phone’s Settings menu for an option like Download a new eSIM or something similar,
  • Make sure both phones are fully charged and connected to Wi-Fi
  • Turn Number Lock OFF in your Mint account
    • In the app, go to Menu and tap Number Lock
    • In your account online, go to My Account, select My Profile & Security and click on Number Lock

Then, start by following the setup steps on your new phone until you reach the “Connect to a Mobile Network” screen.

How to transfer your current eSIM to a new Android

There are two ways to transfer your eSIM from your old Android phone to your new Android phone. This eSIM activation method is relatively new and only available on select Android models.

Transferring an eSIM during the initial activation process

  1. Turn on your new phone
  2. From the initial setup screen, choose Setup using another device and select the option that corresponds with your old phone
  3. Use your old phone’s camera to scan the QR code on your new phone’s screen
  4. Enter PIN from Old device
  5. Connect wifi
  6. Setup wizard runs > Connect to a mobile network >Setup later in the settings
  7. Tap to confirm the eSIM after it is recognized by your new phone
  8. Complete the setup process

Note: instructions and process vary by device type

Transferring an eSIM via the Settings menu of your new Android phone

  1. Go into Settings on your new Android phone
  2. Tap Network & Internet or Connections (the exact name may vary depending on your Android version or phone make & model)
  3. Select SIM manager, SIMs, Add mobile plan or Cellular data (again, the exact name may vary) and tap Add eSIM
  4. If your phone is capable, Transfer SIM from another phone should appear as an option
  5. Use your old phone’s camera to scan the QR code on your new phone’s screen
  6. Place your old Android phone next to your new phone and select the SIM you wish to transfer
  7. Tap Transfer on the new phone and let it do its thing
  8. As an additional step, after activation, set your eSIM as the default for mobile data/voice if needed in the same SIM settings screen.

Once the transfer is complete, you just need to return to the Settings menu to enable the new eSIM in your SIM manager. Then you’re all set and ready to enjoy your Mint service on your new Android phone.
