Whether you use it for driving directions, walking around new cities (and then turning around because you went the wrong direction) or just to check traffic before you head home from the office, many people rely on Google Maps every day. But you may be wondering, how much data does Google Maps use? Well, we’ve got the answer, so let’s dive in.

Does Google Maps use a lot of data?

Does Google Maps use a lot of data?

Short answer: no. Google Maps uses less data than other apps, like social media or streaming apps. It generally uses just 3-5MB per hour for standard navigation.*

Longer answer: it all depends on what you’re using Google Maps for. If you’re zooming in and exploring like you’re playing GeoGuessr, each additional zoomed level downloads more map tiles and uses more data than standard navigation. Constantly refreshing for real-time traffic conditions also uses about 7-10MB per hour and longer trips may use about 12-20MB. And satellite view takes up about 15-20MB per hour since you’ll be using high-res imagery. But all in all, Google Maps’ data usage pales in comparison to other apps.

How to reduce Google Maps’ data usage

Even though Google Maps doesn’t use much data compared to other apps, there are still ways to reduce the data it does use even further. Here are a few tips for using less data on Google Maps:

  • Download maps for offline use: Before you head to your destination, make sure you’re on Wi-Fi and download directions from Google Maps, that way you can use it in offline mode. If you’ll be traveling, you can even download the city maps you’ll need for wherever you’re heading, even if it’s an international destination.
  • Disable Wi-Fi only: If Wi-Fi only is enabled, Google Maps will only use the Wi-Fi for map data and updates. But turning it off will force Google Maps to only use your downloaded offline maps.
  • Limit refreshing: It can be tempting to keep checking traffic conditions to see that red line turn into a yellow line, but limit your refreshes to save on data. (And let’s be real, traffic probably isn’t getting better anyways).
  • Change your data settings: In the Google Maps setting option, you can enable an option called less data for guidance, but be warned this makes the driving directions less detailed.
  • Turn off app updates: If you don’t find yourself needing the app often, or only need it during your travels, you can turn off automatic updates.
