Can you put a landline number on a cell phone?

Ah, the “home phone number.” For many of us, it might be the only phone number we have committed to memory. And if you have a landline in 2025, there’s a good chance you’ve had it for a while; and if you’re moving to a new area code, or even if you’re ready to ditch the home phone taking up space on the countertop, you may not be ready to say goodbye to the number just yet. With all that said, you may be wondering, can you put a landline number on a cell phone and take it with you? The short answer is… most likely. This guide will go over all the steps—from prep to execution—as well as answer common questions that come with transferring a landline number to a cell phone.

Can you transfer a landline number to a cell phone?

Yes, transferring a landline number to a cell phone is essentially the same as transferring a number from one cell phone to another. The internal lingo is “porting a number” and it’s a pretty simple process. In very rare cases, a landline number may not be portable, but if you have a traditional landline with a major carrier, you shouldn’t have any issues.

Why transfer my landline number to a cell phone?

There are many reasons why someone may want to transfer a landline to a cell phone:

  • Convenience
    • You can receive calls to your “home” number from anywhere, not just when you’re home.
  • Cost savings
    • Many mobile plans cost less per month than your traditional landline.
  • More features
    • Get access to modern services like voicemail-to-email, mobile internet and a variety of useful apps.
  • Save space
    • Replacing the landline phone mounted on your wall or sitting on your countertop with a cell phone can help minimize clutter.
  • Keep ahold of a meaningful number
    • Some people have had the same landline phone number for decades. You shouldn’t lose a part of your personal history just because you want to eliminate your landline.
What do I need to know before starting a landline number transfer?

What do I need to know before starting a landline number transfer?

Before starting the transfer process, there are a few steps you need to take to ensure everything goes through smoothly:

  • Contact your current landline provider
    • Confirm with them that your number can be transferred. Most phone numbers are eligible, but on the rare occasion (government numbers, etc) you may not be able to.
  • Verify eligibility with the new wireless provider
    • Contact your new wireless carrier too, to make sure they accept landline numbers and avoid any potential hiccups during the transfer.
  • Gather landline info
    • Get your account number and number transfer PIN from your landline carrier, and make sure to have your billing ZIP code handy.
  • Confirm any potential contract obligations
    • Make sure you won’t be charged an ETF (early termination fee) for canceling your landline. And if it’s part of a bundle with TV or home internet service, removing the landline may affect the service or void any discounts you’re receiving.
  • Don’t cancel your landline before transferring
    • A phone number must be active to be eligible for transfer, so make sure you don’t cancel your landline until the number has successfully been transferred.
