Can an iPhone be on a prepaid plan? By Josh Levesque Published July 2, 2026 It seems the tides are turning as more and more people grow weary of Big Wireless’ nonsense and start looking for alternatives when it comes to their phone plans. Many are turning to plans you pay for up front for their flexibility and long-term cost, plus the fact that many of them allow you to bring your own phone—it just has to be compatible with their network. So can an iPhone be on a prepaid plan? The short answer is yes, but in this article we’ll dig deeper to help you find out if your iPhone can be on a prepaid plan, and if so, should it? In this article iPhone requirements and compatibility for prepaid plans Your iPhone should work with pretty much any plan, but there are a few things that can affect its compatibility that you need to check first. Locked vs. unlocked iPhones: What you need to know If you bought your iPhone from your wireless carrier, it may still be locked to their network, meaning your iPhone won’t accept another carrier’s SIM until it’s unlocked. Fortunately, there are a few easy ways to check if your iPhone is unlocked. Your wireless account information is stored on a SIM, which connects you to your carrier’s network. Your carrier will either provide you with a physical SIM card to insert into your iPhone, or an eSIM which allows you to activate your account digitally. The main differences between eSIM and physical SIM cards are how they’re installed in an iPhone, but it’s important to know that starting with iPhone 14, all iPhone models are eSIM-only. This means that a newer iPhone will only work with carriers that support eSIM. How to switch your iPhone to a prepaid plan Now it’s time to prepare to make the switch, and the good news is that switching carriers is easier than it’s ever been: Make sure your iPhone is unlocked and compatible Choose the correct (or preferred) SIM option for your iPhone Follow the activation instructions provided by your new carrier We dig a little deeper into this in our article about switching carriers with an iPhone, if you want more information.
