Mint Fox wondering, "What do I need to switch phone carriers?"

Switching phone carriers might sound like a huge hassle, but it’s actually much SIMpler than you think (see what we did there?) With just a little prep, you can easily make the switch to a phone carrier that best suits your needs—and wallet. So, if you’re asking, what do I need to switch phone carriers… Well, let’s dive in.

What’s needed to switch phone carriers?

If you want to bring your number when you switch carriers, there’s just a little prep you’ll need to do before you make the switch, including gathering some information from your current carrier. Remember to grab all of these things accurately, because inaccurate information is the no. 1 cause of switching delays.

  • Current phone account information
    • Account number: You can usually find this when you log into your account or it may be listed on any bills you’ve received from your current carrier.
    • Your billing ZIP code
  • Your PIN or number transfer PIN
    • This is a unique code you’ll need if you wish to keep your current number. Just FYI, this isn’t the same as your account login password or phone screen lock PIN. You can typically get this number by calling your current carrier.
  • Device compatibility check
    • Make sure your phone is compatible with the carrier you’re looking into.
  • An unlocked phone
    • Phones must be unlocked for them to work on a new carrier’s network. Not sure how to check if your phone’s unlocked? We’ve got you.
  • Contract status
    • If you’re still under contract with your previous carrier, you may have to pay an early termination fee (or ETF) to switch. But while that might sting for a little bit, the savings you enjoy in the long run might be worth the fee.

Tip: Make sure you don’t cancel your old service until your transfer is complete so you don’t miss a moment of service.

You don’t need much to switch phone carriers, but here’s a peek at the process:

  1. Choose your preferred plan, including how much data you need and the duration of your plan
  2. Decide whether you want to keep your phone number or get a new one
  3. Activate your eSIM or physical SIM card
  4. Confirm everything is good (maybe text your BFF or call your mom) and then do a little new phone carrier jig
