50% of people say they’ll become parents before leaving their parents’ phone plan By Ashley Burnett Updated June 9, 2025 More and more, it seems like people are staying on their parents’ phone plan longer and longer. And like Carrie Bradshaw, we couldn’t help but wonder…just how long? So we surveyed over 600 people between ages 18-49 and asked them about life milestones they’ve reached or will reach in relation to leaving their parents’ phone plan. Unlike Big leaving Carrie for the tenth time, the results may surprise you. In this article 25% of people who left their parents’ plan told us they became parents before leaving their parents’ phone planLife only seems to be getting more and more expensive, which is why we listen and we don’t judge when it comes to saving any way you can—like staying on your parents’ phone plan longer than expected.As you can see in the graphic above, a good percentage of those surveyed said they’d reached some pretty big milestones before hopping off their parents’ phone plan…including becoming parents themselves. Other milestones mentioned were moving out of their parents’ house (56%), buying a car (56%), filing their own taxes (63%) and becoming a pet parent (61%). Over half of respondents said they think major life events like marriage, kids and retirement planning will happen before they ever leave their parents’ plan.Half of respondents also said they thought they’d create an estate plan before leaving their parents’ plan, and nearly 30% said they’d be a grandparent before doing so.
